A minimum of 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
