The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
