Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
